Vancouver has been making a name for itself in the film industry, attracting more discerning customers to its already interesting hotel scene. A mix of French, Anglo, and Asian influences ensures that both the cuisine and design at the hotels here is dominated by fusion. The key for guests is determining exactly which elements of fusion they would like to enjoy the most.
This can help with choosing a location. Vancouver definitely has many natural attractions, so guests who love the water and the hiking will want to explore the Stanley Park area or stay closer to the airport where it is a little wilder. On the other hand, the museums, restaurants, and theater offerings of the Yaletown area are quite a draw for the urban culture lover or gourmand in the family.
The downtown district is certainly dense with hotels. Much of the area is pedestrian friendly, with on site covered parking. Hotels compete to see who can be the most welcoming, and floor to ceiling windows on waterfront properties are practically de rigueur. Almost all hotels in the city have their own restaurant and bar/lounge, contributing to the depth and breadth of the downtown dining scene. |

In terms of operators, the mainline chains are certainly a presence. The Alaskan cruise ship terminal ensures that there will be functional properties for travelers throughout the city. However, there are also a large number of privately run design hotels that cater to the film and art crowd.
Pricing for Vancouver hotels is mixed and depends very much on the provider, amenities, and proximity to the Bay area. Due to both the amount of competition and the softening economy, rates have been falling year over year for the last 2 – 3 years. Within each hotel class, there are bargains, with rooms for basic one – two star properties leading off in the $50 - $70 range, and the upscale boutiques running $100 per night or more. |
